Chapter 13

Wyatt

Staying here was a lot harder than first imagined.

For the last three days, Lilah had emerged from the bedroom like a moth slipping from its cocoon, ready to devour everything in sight.

She hated the food despite Katt’s generous allowances. The bed was too lumpy. The apartment itself was too cold, too dirty, too dull, and too some of everything. At one point, she hogged the bathroom for hours, taking a bath right when his bladder was ready to explode.

It had taken everything he had not to strangle her. There was nothing he could do to please her. Yet, they always managed to touch each other accidentally. Their bodies were rubbing against each other like some weird magnetic pull. He was terrified to go near her. If he did, she would wrap her legs around his waist as he buried himself inside her.

That was all he needed if he wanted to change careers.

“Ready for breakfast?” he called out, studying the menu from the breakfast table as soon as she came out of the bedroom, already glaring at him.

“Bagel with strawberry cream cheese on rye with a side of turkey bacon still out of the question?”

He flipped the menu to the back and flashed it to her. “Sorry, still toast and eggs.” He got up and walked over to the kitchen. “But I did find out that we can make coffee ourselves.”

He wanted her for breakfast, right on top of the breakfast table. He was tugging off her pajama shorts with his teeth. Instead, he just made them coffee. This one drink had to facilitate a truce between them. He had already taken the liberty of ordering. So he placed the steeping hot mugs on the tray and brought it over. Glad that she hadn’t turned it into another fight. He watched her as she sat at the table, grabbed her plate, and placed it in front of her.

“You haven’t been sleeping well these past few nights,” she commented, taking a bite out of her toast. “Hope it wasn’t because of me.”

She was so damn beautiful in the morning it was making him angry, as were her jabs at him. “My sleep hasn’t evened out. My body still thinks I’m on the night shift. But it will work itself out soon enough. Sorry if I kept you up.”

“In this wasteland, it wasn’t too difficult.” She seemed to be staring at his bare chest.

He took a sip of coffee. “I’ll also make sure that I’m fully dressed next time.”

“You should because you could probably catch Tetanus in here,” she said, stabbing at her eggs with her fork.

He knew that he couldn’t fix all the problems between them, but he could still make headway with one. “Okay, stop.”

Her lips thinned. “What?”

He moved his chair over until he was sitting on the side of her. “Close your eyes.”

Her fork clattered to the plate when she dropped it. “Why?”

He took a sip of his coffee before responding. “Just trust me.” Standing up behind her.

She closed her eyes, but her fingers gripped the edge of the table.
